I notice that they explicitly put all of the valid words for that particular puzzle into the source. That would explain the discrepancies with LB, and any other official dictionary source. I think that they just pluck out what they want (from the OED ?) and say tough luck to any others. I often wondered if they had a reduced dictionary (possibly for performance reasons) but I had no idea that they hard coded the valid words. That’s why LB sometimes takes compound words that the OED hyphenates — they “make” them one word in the code. I will now pretend not to have seen this and be blissfully ignorant! 🙂
Yes, the single words are there too. The amount of those does vary, but I agree, we’re playing with a subset of a subset. Still fun to find ones that they omitted. In a way it’s “beating the house”.
