  1. I am SHOCKED! — SHOCKED, I say! — that a New York Times puzzle would not accept NEWSAHOLIC. Like Judy and Jill, I would have expected IGNORANCE ELSEWHERE.

    1. Extremely painstaking. I’ll be further reporting when back from work. NARGHILE is Turkish for water pipe. Astonished to have accepted.

        1. As promised, here’s a more detailed account of today’s dramatic & chaotic puzzle.
I normally have it done and dusted before heading off to work -not the case today; I had to put in a shift with an extra thorn in my side.
I had contemplated, by order of appearance, CLOWN, WRANGLES, SLEIGH, OCEAN, SLOWER, WHOLE, ANERGIC, WHORLS, SEAHORSE, ANGLICE, AHORSE, LOWERCASE, GNARLS, HEROIC, ANGLEWISE, (RE)WEIGH(ER), CLEARANCES, CLEANSER, OILCANS, NOWHERES, WHANG, COILERS, GARLIC, LICENSOR, WHENCE, ANGLERS, CLOSER, REHANG, GRAIL, LONG, SONG, SWEAR, SWORE, SERAGLIOS, ORACLES, GROWN, and CROWN -all accepted but all for naught.
Out of desperation, I made an attempt on my winner, at first in the form of NARGILEH which, although accepted, wouldn’t cut it as far as the pesky S was concerned. With a spring in my step, I went on to try NARGHILE: Double the surprise, also accepted (& is, in fact, more to the point, the way the actual word is pronounced).
All in all, a happy ending with some compensation with regard to words that are unexpectedly accepted, even though these are significantly outweighed by those that are inexplicably rejected.
That’s the tale of the tape with my ‘Royal Pipe Dreams’.

          1. Wonderful!
I wanted whorls to work as well. Also wanted a satisfying theme involving resilience but never got there; in spite of going round and round that square with dogged determination.

  2. Now THAT is what I call dedication to a task! Bravo!

Today’s puzzle truly had demonic letter placement. Swap H and N and all kinds of fun possibilities open up.

  3. Banged my head against the wall on this one. Finally eked out LONGWISE – ENHANCER but only after quite a long WRANGLE!

Loved learning the news words posted.
