  1. SHAMROCK—KIBITZ
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Half-solutions:
    COHABITS—SKRAMZʷ
    KAZAMʷ—MICROHABITATS
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ʷ Wiktionary

      1. Yeah microhabitat + tzaziki is so close but no way to add the s, and microhabitats couldn’t get it done even though it leaves only two letters

  2. SHAMROCK-KIBITZ – I knew there was going to be a Yiddish component, but I was stuck on MACHZOR (no go, ZO) and MATZAH(S), also no go. Was gutted that BHAKTIS-SCAMORZA wasn’t an option because of IS on the same side. Also missed having RAZORBACK/BIRTHMARK/RHIZOMIC as options, but weren’t for VO and RTH reasons.

    Anyway, it took about 10 minutes. Calling Kanishk and RF, my lovelies, how’d you get on?

    Good luck, everyone, and happy Thursday!

        Miss Irim, I failed to get on board on this one. But, I like it when it’s hard like this where I had to invent words to arrive at a solution. Because if successful, it would be so gratifying.

        I’m so pissed I gave up yesterday because it was doable in hindsight.

        Kudos for your success today Miss Irim. Checking on Kanishk-boy later.

        1. Oh, RF, I’m 100% sure you’ll be back on track in no time. This is just one of Sam’s sadistic phases. There’ll always be a new puzzle to tackle tomorrow.

          Congrats, Irim – very similar thought process here. As soon as I opened today’s grid I knew it would contain Yiddish – my first instinct was to check for SCHMALTZ, BLITZ, CHUTZPAH etc, all of which weren’t possible. SCAMORZA is an amazing find, Irim – thank you for the new word!

          Decided to set the puzzle aside and play it later when I could fully concentrate on it. My phone battery was at 2%, so I decided to wait until I reached home (I was taking the metro). While waiting, I went “Wait, KLEZMER is a good one… hmm… wait, no, I don’t remember an E being in there. What about KIBITZ? Yeah, that’s a good one, let’s try it!” SHAMROCK magically unfolded from there.

          So, all in all, it took me around 10 minutes as well, SHAMROCK – KIBITZ (OA) after working backwards from the latter. The only reason I’m familiar with SHAMROCK is because I discovered it while I was researching shades of green for an art project. Today I learnt that it’s a kind of clover, which also happens to be the national emblem of Ireland. The more you know!

          Condolences, RF, and congratulations, Irim – tomorrow is a new day, may the triumvirate be successful! Good luck and Happy Thrusday to everyone.

  3. After unsuccessfully working with “acrobatics” “aromatics” “hatchback” and others, I finally came across shamrock …kibitz came quickly after those meddling words…

  4. Took me a while to find Kibitz and Shamrock came easily after that. I should start with Yiddish from now on. The Irish came naturally to me. I was so proud of Macrobiotics and Czaritza (var. of Czaritsa) that I wasted a lot of time seeking matches for those.

    Still I had enough time to come up with my own alternative:
    BIRCHBARKS*. SMORZATO**
    * Indian canoes. “Canoe Camping
    A Guide to Wilderness Travel.”
    **Musical term for a soft light touch. see: https://www.musicca.com/dictionary

  5. My comment hasn’t been posted for some reason. I just want to say I got the OA after a bit of kvetching. And came up with my own answer too.
    BIRCHBARKS SMORZATO
    *birchbark canoes
    **musical term

  6. OA in a little under 5 minutes. I knew some sort of Yiddish was going to come into play but was exploring SCHMITZ options first. I think I’m going to have to start studying up to prepare for the next one 🙂

  7. Sri Lankan mom

    Thrilled to get shamrock kibitz, but sad I couldn’t get shazam to work – tried brickbots instead of brickbats but no luck

  8. Catherine Gardiner

    Spent too much time going nowhere fast! But I did see Shazam. Thank you Gomer Pyle.
    Birchbark appeared today and this past Saturday. Neither time was this word helpful.

  9. OA- could tell it was Yiddish immediately with RHIZO- not being an option, and came up with MATZAH before landing on KIBITZ. SHAMROCK was easy from there, but it is a singular solution.

  10. Samuel Hanwich

    Thought it might be a tough one today at first glance, but I tried ZITS and SHAMROCK was right there with just the B left, so thought of KIBITZ, not being sure if it was spelled with one B or two, for the quick OA.

  11. OA finally! Kibitz one of first tries . Then had to go through hazmat Mazar tzar czar Shazam acrobatics macrobiotics khaki Brahma batik somatic aromatic motorboat ski boat matchsticks chatbot hatchback kickbacks kratom ticktocks rockstar atomic stock cars birchbark brickbats and more before seeing shamrock Aaarghh! To borrow Irims word
