  1. I love the OA, but I love my answer even more: MIRCH – HOUSEFLY immediately.
    I was delighted that Mirch was accepted (“mirch” means chilli in Indian English). Loving the efficiency!

    I expect to see a plethora of solutions today. This past week has had a lot of great puzzles, with plenty of possible alternatives – keep it up, Sam!

    Irim and RF, hoping to see your solutions soon!

    1. Brilliantly done, hon!

      Slightly less efficient here as I didn’t even think of MIRCH – I don’t think of it as being used in English at all, especially American English – so I went with the slightly less efficient SMIRCH-HOUSEFLY. Was gutted that EMULSIFY wasn’t possible, because CHORE was right there. Also CHYMOUS, RIFLES, FIREHOUSE, FLUORESCE (-S, -R), etc.

      Waiting for RF to complete the triumvirate! Good luck, everyone, and happy Thursday!

    2. Adrian Stanworth

      MICROFICHES SOULY. Where in the rules does it say “efficiency” is best? I think using longer words is best!

        1. Radioactive Flower

          OA. In 13 minutes.

          Love your solutions my besties.

          Yay!!! The triumvirate did it again!!! 👏

          1. Woohoo, *high fives all around*!

            Adrian, I hear you – I just love me a 13/2 solution!

          2. Took me quite awhile. Finally got to MICROFICHES-SERIOUSLY. Couldn’t believe I couldn’t finish Ferociously, Humorously, or Lusciously among others. 115/127, 6/7, 5, 36

      1. I agree! Efficiency doesn’t satisfy as much as multi-syllabic 😊. I settled Microfiches Slouchy,

  2. Annoyed myself by being unable to find a pair despite finding housefly/flies, microfiche and lecherously – all of which looked very promising.

  3. Selected solutions that caught my eye and had a ring to them:
    MIRCH—HOUSEFLY
    MESOHYL—LUCIFER
    CHROMIUM—MYSELF
    MICROFICHE—ELUSORY
    MUSCIFORM—MESOHYLS
    LYCEUM—MICROFICHES
    FOLIUM—MYRMECOCHORES
    MYRMECOCHOROUS—SELFIE
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I didn’t know MYRMECOCHORES or MYRMECOCHOROUS, but I was determined to use FOLIUM, as in the Folium of Descartes, after one of my favorite mathematician-philosophers. My Agent Smith program had to dig deep. And SELFIE, for its relatively recent induction into the lexicon (2002 according to ChatGPT).
  4. SMIRCH-HOUSEFLY here because like many others, I didn’t think to try MIRCH. Before that, I spent a while on SCHOLIUM; would be curious if anyone sees a pairing for it.
    1. The closest I could get was with two near misses:
      FERYS—SCHOLIUM
      SCHOLIUM—MERCIFY
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      FERYS: In OED, in WIKT, but not in Scrabble,
      MERCIFY: In OED, in WIKT, and passes muster in Scrabble.

  5. FIREFLIES SMOUCHY*
    *archaic. From smouch. To acquire dishonestly. “A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles.” 1919. Also in Eric Partridge’s Dictionary of English Slang, 2002. Used by Charles Lamb to describe the Tartars. 🙂

  6. Catherine Gardiner

    Schemers & Soulify
    Should have spent more time looking for a partner for either Houseflies or Horseflies.
    I really don’t like the word, Soulify.

  7. Samuel Hanwich

    Never would have thought of SMIRCH or MIRCH when I was playing with variations of HORSEFLY and HOUSEFLY, but MYSELF was right there after seeing CHROMIUM for the OA.
