I’m calling boo-hiss on this one NYT. The meaning for Jankiest comes up as of ‘Informal, Nth American Origin’. I got Tuxedo which wouldn’t match anything for a second word. So many words are ‘not a word’, but this passes muster? Glad I gave up when I did.
I concur. I found tuxedo and tried junkiest, which is at least found in a small handful of dictionaries. But jankiest ??? seriously ???
Same. After junkiest didn’t work I did not expect jankiest to be accepted (even my autocorrect wants to change jankiest to junkiest). Was even more surprised that was the OA.
Totally agree!
OA here as well, and with Junkiest somehow unacceptable, I suspect the OA is the O(nly)A. We’ll see if anyone finds another.
I had JUKE EXODONTIAS. Alas, exodontias is a word but not recognized by NYT dictionary. I caved in this one. The OA a bit weird.
This was my solution, too—finally. EXODONTIA is a PSW (and so is it’s plural), so I’m hanging my hat on that.
There is no two-word solution to this puzzle that would be playable in Scrabble, so I’m not even going to dignify it with birds today.
Actually, I take that back. JUKE-EXODONTIAS would be playable in Scrabble, so MICA for the win!
agree!
OA
Found TUXEDO–after trying to use JUNKIEST–and then tried JANKIEST, which, to my surprise, worked.
Got the OA quite quickly. I’m not that surprised JANKIEST was accepted. I’ve heard people describe things as JANKY before, and I’m not even from North America; I’m from Scotland.
I also stopped at JUNKIEST-TUXEDO. Also found JUJITSU. Jankiest – no way.
Pretty much likewise, Fishcake. Janky puzzle.
Oh so close.
I had stinkiest and junkiest and also had tuxedo but didn’t think jankiest was a valid word.
i had Tuxedo and tried Jankie (not accepted) but didn’t go whole hog superlative. “Jankiest”. . .what?
got the OA but don’t know what jankiest is.. I will go look it up now. Was hoping for a pair for jiujitsu which was accepted….
CATLIKE – ERUPTION here. Reminiscent of a hairball expulsion?
Loving the variety today, unlike yesterdays puzzle which was definitively janky 🙂
PLUCKIER REINCARNATION
A brave comeback . . .
