The answers are:
FATHERINGGLEAMED
FLAMED – DITHERING. Slightly better than the official 🙂 And another quick win for me.
Same here. Arrived at it as fast as I could type.
Me as well, although I toyed with FATHERING for a second. It occurs to me that FARTHING–GLEAMED would be a more efficient solution than the official.
FLAMED DITHERING here too. I am a ditherer myself according to my British relatives, so it sprung to mind.
FARTHING GLEAMED
Farthing Gleamed
Me too…
FLAN — NIGHTMARED
FATHERLAND — DEMANDING
FLAN – NIGHTMARED 14/2 (the dreaded calories’ calculation?). NIGHTMARE is on my list of long words with single-use letters, but turning it into a verb was quite a stretch. My log of unpairables comprises HALF-, FRIEND, DIGHT, RIGHT, THERMAL, FIRMAMENTAL, GRAINED, HANGED, LENGTH, TRIFLE, FIREARMED, EARTHING, FLAMED, FREIGHT, FARTHING, LAMED, FLANGED, and MERIDIAN.
Afright, Figment, Finger(ed), Tandem and Farmhand also seemed promising, until they didn’t. Ditto Mermaid and the surprising Mermaiden. There were a bunch more, but I can’t remember them. I need to start writing these down!
FLAN – NIGHTMARED for me, too. Nightmared? Really??
Fatherland Demanding (they do tend to be!) is another excellent answer. I also liked Fathering Gleamed, as in “when he was just a gleam in his father’s eye”… But Flamed Dithering is still my favorite.
I am very disappointed that the puzzle is back to allowing only one play for us non-subscribers, at least on the iPhone. That was long the case, but recently I was able to play over and over on my phone, except that the Restart button didn’t work. I’ll have to go back to being careful not to complete the puzzle prematurely.
Bernie, you can “clear history and website data” in the iPhone settings (under Safari in my case), and then you can replay as much as you like. It just takes a few extra seconds. 🙂
I’ll definitely try this! Thanks, Mark!
Wow, Fatherland was the first word I got but couldn’t pair it for a 2 word answer. Later got Fathered-Demanding with L left over, but didn’t make the connection to use Fatherland instead. I also got Fathering-Glam, but later got FREIGHTING-GLEAMED and entered it. Many good words and 3-word solutions

What’s wrong with NEANDERTHAL?
Proper name issue, I suppose…
Farthing Gleamed
Although I got Flamed Dithering, the image of Farthing Gleamed is SO appealing: it sounds magical.
Don’t discount Flamed Dithering, Judy! I think it’s the best answer of the day!
I went with Elfin Nightmared. Although like others I question the “verbization”, I thought it had a Midsummer Night’s Dream-iness about it.
Thanks, Bernie. Elfin Nightmared (despite the suspect word) does have a Midsummer Night’s Dream-ish vibe to it.
FRIGHTING GLEAMED
Fathering Gleamed
Easy solution today leaves me hungry.
FLAMED – DITHERING was my first solution, but I toyed for a bit and found GRANDFATHERING – GLAM, which I like much better.
Old salts never die, DW; they just keep getting saltier! 😉
Exactly!
Grandfathering-gleam. Just the first thing to come to mind. Two sip post dinner coffee solution.
GRANDFATHER—RIFLEMEN
A remembrance perhaps. Obviously the singular RIFLEMAN is a solution as well. ‘*Father*’ is a nice theme builder today.
RIFLEMAN—NIGHTRIDER
LAMENTING—GRANDFATHER
I definitely benefited from the weird word acceptance today.
FLAMER – RIGHTHAND
Slightly better than official at (15-2)
grandfather – remedial
FREIGHTING – GLEAMED got me there.
FRIGHTING (apparently a word) GLEAMED to throw on the pile
Same here
Me too. FREIGHTING GLEAMED
Lamenting grandfather. First word adjective or verb.
farmhand – delating
Flamer Righthanded
Flamer-righthand
Official, but it took me a while to let go of GIRLFRIEND. Sadly my best effort on those lines was MEDITATING-GIRLFRIEND-DEATH. That sounds like a story in three words for sure.
After getting the official answer, I borrowed yours to get GIRLFRIEND,DREAMT,THIN.
FLAN – NIGHTMARED
A chinquapin using only letters from the puzzle, except for ‘s.
Elfin
Flame dithering
In the night firmament,
A farthing gleamed in grandfather’s
Thin hand.
I like it. It ties in.
Well done! Now, that’s a set-up for magic indeed.
CINQUAIN!
(don’t know how those ‘qua’ letters snuck in)
In awe again, as always.
FATHERLAND DEMANDING
