    1. GUNBOATS – STRIVE 14/2 here, as well. Other finds include OUTAGES, VIBRANT, VIBRATES, OUTGAIN, GROSE, ROUGES, BOUGIES, TRAIN, VINTAGES, VENTRI-, ROBUSTA, OBTUSE, VEIN, AIRBUS, UNROBES, OUTGIVEN, OUTGIVES, OBTAIN, GRIEVOUS, BEATEN, and GROVES. I’ve lately been reporting on rejected words in passing, but today’s prey really deserves a special mention: ARBOROUS (how the heck is that not a word?) and ESTRAGON; do you guys at NYT have an English word for it, or have you decided to act like it never existed?

      1. I looked it up and found it’s also called TARRAGON, which is hardly any more English (you won’t be surprised to know that both stem from Ancient Greek, and are akin to DRAGON).

        1. We use tarragon in New York. Never heard of estragon (thought a hormone, maybe?) although I am a foodie and I grow tarragon.
Probably a lot of people wouldn’t know what an aubergine is, either. Hint- use of its emoji can lead to amusing misunderstanding.

          1. I’m not clear how exactly estragon affects estrogens, but there we are… AUBERGINE is, however, an excellent case in point, as I’m positive it has, previously, been accepted in this game -despite an English term being available (spilling the beans here with EGGPLANT). I wouldn’t even put it past them to accept BRINJAL to keep the whole of the Commonwealth happy (I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for it).

        2. Thanks for the vocab expansion! I never heard of Estragon before except as the character in Waiting for Godot. So the joke of the character being named Tarragon was lost on me until now. It’s like Ford Prefect in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, picking a human name he thought wouldn’t attract attention because he saw it everywhere. Americans missed the joke; we didn’t know the Prefect was the British version of the Escort.

          1. Ford Escort!!!
Completely missed that- for like, 42 years!
And I thought Hitchhiker’s Guide couldn’t be any funnier.
            Wow.

    2. It turns out the puzzle accepts SEVIR, although scrabble doesn’t; I can’t find an English definition, but who cares as long as LB is contented? So Gunboats Sevir for 13/2. Still no match for the official answer…

      1. I would have hoped it’s not ‘sévir’ (which is a solid French verb meaning ‘to hit’, ‘to strike’, ‘to crack down’ etc.), as that would be further rubbing it in re ESTRAGON. According to Wiktionary, it is an alternative form of SEXVIR which -again- is NOT what many might assume it is…

  1. The official can’t be beaten for efficiency, but I didn’t spot VINEGAR. I should have, as I was descaling humidifiers yesterday. I did spot VIGOROUS -SUBTENANT (accepted) and BOVINES (accepted) – SUGARIEST (not accepted but a playable Scrabble word).

    1. I feel hard done by as BOVINES SUGARIEST would have given me a win. Only able to get it in 3 with BRAINIEST TUG GOVE. Disappointed seeing so many viable 2s here as I spent a long time and couldn’t get one 😪 .

  2. GRIEVOUS – SUBSTANT finally after a lot of dead ends that seemed promising. Today’s was elusive for me, for some reason, but I found a way eventually.

    1. As DW says, can’t beat the official answer for efficiency, and it has TI too. But I missed Vinegar and so failed to pair Robust. I did find Grievous Substant and almost settled for it before spotting Invigorates Sub. Easily done, just add jalapeños.
      Other finds along the way: Airborne, Beguine(s), Bovine(s), Gargantua(s)/(n), Grove(s), Outborn, Outgive(s)/(n), Starve(s), Suborn, Sugar(s), Unborn, Venison, Vibrant, Vibrate(s), Visor(s), Vigorous.

    1. This is my favorite answer of the day, and seemingly unique! Bogarts is awesome by itself, and I don’t think anyone else has spotted Souvenir. Good work, Henry+Michaels!
