When I solved this puzzle, I vaguely remembered HYDROCARBON being part of a previous OA. I looked it up, and discovered that HYDROCARBON – NIFTY had appeared as an OA long back, which works as an alternate answer for today’s puzzle!
Posted at exactly the same time! The scientist in me found HYDROCARBON first, then NIFTY unfolds naturally from there. Well done!!

My first guess was CONFAB BIRTHDAY but wrong positioning. Then I found some bizarre words like CONTRABANDITRY and CHRONOFACTORY abd CHRONOTRON that are not LB accepted and I couldn’t pair them. Eventually I did hit on the OA but wasn’t satisfied.
I prefer BAH HYDROFACTION* — the latter word comes from a poem The Desert Music” by William Carlos Williams.
