      1. Fancies Shorty here as well, almost instantly. Describes my XL partner’s first contact with my miniature self.
Tons of inventive answers today – a lot more fun than the recent run of sole two-word answers!

  1. Goodness, am I the first in with the official answer? Not that it’s better, mind you. Worse than all these other ones, in fact.

    1. They may indeed. For reasons that escape me, MERLOT is a playable Scrabble word (according to Merriam-Webster) but SYRAH is not. And yet, SHIRAZ is playable, despite being a synonym for SYRAH. Go figure.

      1. This is exactly it, DW! In light of that, I don’t anymore know about BORDEAUX, which I’ve been keeping in reserve…

  2. Letter Boxed has homesteaded a corner of my brain. While looking up the outdated spelling UNCONTROVERTIBLY (most recent citation 1913?), it occurred to me “It has 12 different letters: a potential one-word solution!” 😀

    1. That’s an interesting idea. We know 12/1 solutions are possible, as we saw LEXICOGRAPHY a couple weeks ago. Your UNCONTROVERTIBLY would be a 16/1 solution. Hence, the question arises. Are 13/1, 14/1, 15/1, and larger, solutions possible? Theoretically yes (i.e. HYDROSULFATES), but in the actuality of the game, I’m not sure. It seems logical that if a 12/1 is possible, so too should be those larger types. I’ve never seen them, but they could be there, just lurking beneath the surface.

Alas, we’re always at the mercy of the games word list, which is clearly a subset of larger available dictionaries.

      But the frontier is close.
      🙂

      1. The accepted word list is one limitation; the way letters are distributed (array on each side) is another. Surely, we’ve all had the “If only I could use those two letters together!” moment.

  3. Official. Being seasonal in my thematic mind: Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge, a FANTASTIC-CROTCHETY character, who still creeps me out.

  4. Got:
    TORCHES SANCTIFY
But it took an embarrassingly long time, which involves finding:

    CONSTRAINT TETCHY (F)
    CHYRONS STRAFE (I)
    FINCHES STARY (O)
    TORCHES SANITY (F)
    TRIFECTAS SHINY (O)
    CRYONIC CHAFES (T)
    CRYONICS SAFEST (H)

    Also, some disallowed ones:
    SYRIAN
    HANSEATIC
    HEARTEYES

    1. *involved
      Also found:
      CHASTITY
      CONSTRAINT
      FORTIFIES
      HEARTIES (as in, “me hearties”)
      INFINITY
      INSTANTIATE
      IRONIC
      NOTCHES
      SCORCHES
      TECHNICS
      TRIFECTA
