  1. OA. Very quick solution, not many options to try. I looked at Chrono- words to begin with, then spotted strong and box and then that was it.

    1. Yes, I wanted chronons stompbox, but the g made the OA unavoidable. That woulda been a percussionist who could really keep time!

  2. now this was a challenge i can savor – one vowel! knew BOX was involved, wasn’t sure STRONGBOX is a word (as I thought it was the name of an App), tried it and presto!

      1. I for one very much enjoy Connections. Sometimes it takes a little research, but it’s worth the trouble. Plus, I like to use each day’s Connections answers as the source for the five-letter word that starts that day’s Wordle. Like today, I started Wordle with Storm, followed by Blade. Adds some variety and an element of serendipity.

    1. Last resort, in frustration, after forgetting the combination… “And, what is the reason for your visit to the dentist today?”

  3. Briefly worked with Photobombs, first. Saw Strongbox but that left the C out. Then put Strongbox I first – easy solve after that.

    1. Same experience for me as for Mica – had to let go of Photobombs before I got the OA, which probably stands for “only answer” today.

    2. Exactly the same thing here. Thought I really had something with Photobombs, but loved the challenge of a single vowel. Good one Mr. Ezersky!!!

  4. Bernie Horowitz

OA, perforce – I can’t imagine there’s any other two-word solution. Saves time, I guess, but at the expense of fun.
I seem to recall Strongbox appearing in another, fairly recent OA, under similar constraints.

  5. A one-hit wonder for sure. Didn’t take long, but en route I was surprised that BOTOX was not accepted — and it’s not a PSW, either. Turns out it’s a proper noun and trademarked. You learn something new every day!

I don’t have access to my database and script this week, so I can’t run an exhaustive check on the birds, but, unless I am mistaken, there is only one: TROGON. COOT, POTOO, and MOTMOT are all no-gos because of letter placement.

  6. Chomps Strongbox here too. After my initial ‘What no vowels!’ reaction, too easy.

Now I’m thinking of cows and cattle races. Only one way to go, not good!

    1. I haven’t played LB much for a while and this looked impossible at first! But I got Chomps Strongbox quite quickly 😀

  7. The OA is undoubtedly a singular solution today.
There’s only one atom too; BORON ₅B.
    Even anagrams are sparse:

    PROTON | PRONTO
    MORTS | STORM
    NORTH | THORN
    HORNS | SHORN
    GHOST | GOTHS
    BROTH | THROB

I did learn a new word, MORT.
And in physics, PHOTONS are BOSONS, while PROTONS are not.
Nice to see the PRONGHORN at least, the fastest land mammal in the Americas, and indigenous to my neck of the woods.

    1. Mark, it’s great to see pronghorns here! I just last week read an essay about their fantastic speed as an example of ‘relict behavior.’

  8. Yes. Surprisingly quick, but rewarding in other ways. It’s not often that the single-solution puzzles are easy (for me). And, actually working within the single-vowel constraint was a neat.
I’m not saying I’d like to do it again right away, but . . .

  9. OA.
Looked first for Box words. Strong mopped up plenty of letters, so I knew I was on the right track. Put another O in the middle of what’s left, and Robert’s your mother’s brother !

    1. Oh no please, Fishcake – don’t tempt fate! Congrats on the solve after the dry spell. I hate those spells, especially when others manage to come up with lots of different solutions. LB despair!

  10. I stuck with it because it was such a nice challenge with one vowel. Tried photobombs and then went down looking for compound words. And eventually got official.
As mentioned above has to be a single solution

  11. OA after futzing with STOMPBOX for awhile. Figured BOX would have to be how the X is used, and having the word start with S seemed too convenient to not be official. Saw STRONG while trying to deal with the leftovers and everything clicked into place!

  12. I also was surprised to get the OA solution quickly with only one vowel and many challenging letters in the puzzle!
