    1. Me too. My wrestling obsession helped in this one I think. The ‘mandible claw’ was a famous move and was my introduction to the word.

      1. Same here, but only after wasting a lot of time looking to use –ABLE and –FUL suffixes. Fun, though. Couldn’t solve it on my lunch break, but finally after dinner . . .

  1. A 13/2 improvement on the official: FUMBLED DONAIR – when the Halifax sandwich-maker needs more training. Admittedly Donair was an accident, but a reasonably happy one.

          1. Oh yes! Donairs are delicious. But, like most things “Canadian,” they are definitely not sui generis.

Several years ago, a Canadian magazine ran a competition asking readers to submit entries completing the Canadian equivalent of the phrase, “As American as apple pie.” The winner sent in, “As Canadian as possible under the circumstances.”

    1. I had FUMBLED DONAIR right away. The word donair is used across Canada, and I thought I had seen it in Seattle though the alternate spelling DONER might be more common.

  2. UNIFORMED – DOABLE 15/2. Quite tricky, in the sense that both -FUL & -ABLE suffixes were on offer. I went through AMBER, LIBERO, FORMABLE, DEIFORM, OLIBANUM, as well as FLUIDRAM, which is new on me -and has a camouflaged Greek element in its formation.

    1. Same solution here

I’m so curious. Where is everyone located (if you’re comfortable sharing that info)? I seem to be late to the game even if I sign on at 4am. I’m in Southern California.

      1. Hi Bea, I’m in Denver. The game comes online at my 1:00 AM. I usually try to stay awake until then, but I did not succeed in that last night. 😴

        1. Gotcha. So it goes live midnight PT. I don’t even stay up late on NYE, so I doubt I’ll ever be one of the first on here. 😂 Thanks, Mark!

      2. I’m in the Mid-Atlantic region, but don’t get started on Wordle or anything else (SB, LB) until after lunch. Too much going on in the morning for me these days.

      3. Portland OR here. I soemetimes stay up until midnight when it posts here and try to get #1 spot with something original but rarely accomplish it. Usually I wait until next day amd am to late to get anything over on this fantastic group Today I see so many halves of pairs I tried but ran out of patience this included Spell Bee today which I broke a few year streak by not going genius might have to stop doing the long ones

        1. Other Portland here – Maine, the original. Spelling Bee and LetterBoxed drop at 3:00 am Eastern time, Wordle at Midnight.

      4. Boston area here (Harvard, though not Cambridge). Bernie – we spend much of the summer on Bailey Island and hope to move to Portland in about 3-4 years. 3AM is probably not happening for me 🙂

  3. ANDIRON – NUMBERFUL

My usual method is to begin by typing before I even look at all the letters, just to see if any useful or interesting words jump out at me from the start. This was the second time ever that that method led right to an acceptable answer right off, without a single false start. I didn’t really think it would accept “numberful”, but there it was – solved in about six seconds.

  4. DUMBFOUND – DERAIL was the first solution I stumbled across, but I decided I preferred DUMBFOUNDED – DERAILED, in honour of our occasional failures to solve the puzzle. BOUNDER – RIFLEMAN could define an entire genre of Hollywood films but also applies with different definitions of both words to an adorable endemic New Zealand bird that jumps around in the underbrush as it feeds.

  5. FLOUNDER-REMEDIABLE 🐠👩‍🏫 a school FOR correcting a school OF fish.

I switched to playing the free version (even though I have the subscription so still supporting the NYT 🤓) so once I get a solution, I’m out. Tipping my hat to many of the much better finds today. Aka, solution envy 💚

    1. “Clearing history”, in both mobile and desktop, allows one to play again, even in the free version. Good solution, too!

  6. INBOARD-DREAMFUL

stayed with FUMBLED, FUMBLER for a while, didn’t reach the second words other did.

I’m in Madison, Wis. and don’t stay up late to play this.
