    1. Same here. WALKTHROUGH bailed some of us out not that long ago -if memory serves me. Not a huge amount of material processed today; WALKER (ROUGHIT wouldn’t enter my radar), WALKOUT, WEIGHT, WATER, ALIGHT, and THREW.

      1. I had the same sense of seeing WALKTHROUGH recently. Speaking of past puzzles, it’s a relief to find all the PATCHOULI IMBIBErs survived.

        1. So, I did a little backward search and found WALKTHROUGH was part of the official answer -and, in fact, critical for any possible solution- as recently as December 31st; it’s either us or the puzzle running out of ideas…

          1. I meant to mention the Walkthrough’s recent appearance.
Let us not succumb to apophenia. Inasmuch as only 26 letters exist, and almost half of them are needed for each puzzle, overlap is built in. Hence the recurring Numbats….

          2. (Reply to BERNIE HOROWITZ, 01/27, 9:17) That’s certainly the case, Bernie, although NUMBAT is much more likely to reappear (as it does and will), due to the quantity & quality of the letters it contains. But I did make the point rather jokingly -perhaps my sparing use of emojis is to blame… That said, apophenia IS my middle name (as I’ve already stated). 🙂

      1. Yep. Same here, with ‘HIE.’ Yes also that WALKTHROUGH was definitely a word—possibly not part of an official answer, but one that many had found and used. Couldn’t have been further back in time (i.e., ‘less recently’) than November.

    1. KEWL – LAR – ROUGHIT

So, if you belong to an ancient Roman household, and your god is too cool; it might make things hard for you.

      Go figure.

      1. (and ROUGHIT was the only thing underlined in red as I wrote the comment)
Sometimes the box seems a padded room surrounded by letters.

    2. Just another Walkthrough-Hie here, but Mark should not downplay Walker Roughit! By my lights that’s a winning entry, for brevity (the only 13/2 so far), and thematic integrity (trekking in the Outback, say), AND sheer inventiveness (I would never have come up with Roughit as even a possibility). Kudos!

      1. Thanks Bernie; and yes, Steph did pull the trigger quicker. I agree with you, it’s a good theme. I’m walking to campus everyday now and slipping on the ice all over the place (roughing it). Walkthrough appeals to me too I guess. All good.

    3. Got the same, first as three-word warmup, WALKER – ROUGH – HIT, then thought wouldn’t it be it nice if ROUGHIT was a word? Nice big surprise.

    4. I was about to give up on 2 words and enter WALKER ROUGH HIT when I tried ROUGHIT instead and was surprised it got accepted!

  1. Rawk, kewl, lighter, rout (rouk)
… it was a great show till we were chased out through the fog of the smoke machines.

The continuing saga of what words are acceptable and why.

  2. Official for me today. I very much like the thematic integrity of WALKTHROUGH – HIE!

Kudos to Mark for even trying ROUGHIT, which is not a playable Scrabble word. As far as I can tell, it is not even a word at all! 😆

    1. Talking about ‘fast’, Jimmy John’s is FAST. As soon as I place my order, it seems like the sandwich is on the counter already! I do the #12 though, and replace cucumbers with pickles. 😋

  3. Walker-Roughit
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I tried roughit just for fun. It seems that Letter Boxed has some inventive ways of using its dictionary as none of the standard ones list roughit as a word. Try Googling “roughit meaning” by placing roughit in quotation marks. Otherwise Google thinks of “roughit” as the expression”rough it”.
