After some dictionary work I found YAKUZA to go with VELOCITY. Never heard of it!

Got VELOCITY and figured there should a suitable Y-word. Wasn’t showing up at my house, though. . .
Official. YAKUZA is a playable Scrabble word. It came to my mind fairly quickly because I spend a lot of time in Japan (and because I have a son who is deeply into Japanese anime). But it would not come to mind readily without unusual circumstances, so I don’t think it is fair to build a one-solution puzzle around it, as this one clearly is. That’s my general attitude toward boutique foreign loan words: they are fine if they are part of one solution among several.
Somewhat slim pickings on the birds today, but I did find KAKA, TUI, TIT (a broad genus), and, if I allow myself multi-word birds (why not?), COAL TIT.
Official, too. And not expecting fairness any longer, but maybe that’s exactly the reason why I keep wasting time with this.
I found this solution soon after trying VELOCITY. It has a John Wick vibe.

Official here! I think I saw VELOCITY basically right away, but (wrongly) assumed it’d be impossible to find a Y- word using K and Z as well, then played around with KLUTZ with no luck, spent too much time trying to find -IZE words, then oddly enough, thought up YUKATA (a japanese casual kimono) first, before realizing YAKUZA was staring me right in the face this whole time, ready to be paired with that very first word! Oh, the journeys we take.

Official here after finding VELOCITY and then resorting to looking for solutions starting with Y. Never heard of YAKUZA. I’m losing my interest in this game due to the esoteric and constrained solutions, but hats off to those of you whose vocabularies are way more expansive than mine! Off to more enjoyable ventures 🙂

Yeah. I solved in 6 with words I know, and a shrug. I don’t expect myself to solve with words I don’t know, like YAZUKA.

Yakuza way outside of my field of view, knowledge, and even intuition. f
Apparently, the first use of the word was to name the most worthless hand in a card game– an 8-9-3– which was then itself named yakuza (like an inverse of our ’21’, blackjack). Only later was it applied to the Japanese mafia.

Your learn something new every day! I had no idea. Must be from an older version of Japanese; in modern Japanese, 8-9-3 would be hachi, kyu, san.

Took longer than it should have, but finally found the official answer. I have no moral objections to Yakuza – once Hollywood promulgates a word, it can no longer be considered obscure. My phone dictation had more trouble with “obscure”.
