    1. Same here. K seemed like the one to be focusing on, so I went BANK, DUSK, DUCK, DUKE(S), BUCKOES, and then anything with -AGE, (GOD)SEND, GOADSMAN, and GUMBO(S). MUDBANKS was my basic lead helping spot GECKO. O was quite an unexpected transition, too. Not sure it qualifies as a single-solution puzzle, but I can’t see a lot of alternatives.
PS: I didn’t back off my forecast challenge yesterday -I just forgot all about it (but there were no real high-scoring prospects with this one, as it turned out).

      1. Hang about! Solving app says GEODUCKS – SUBMAN; how on earth did I ever miss GEODUCK (remember that, Bernie?)!

        1. Bernie Horowitz

I did indeed remember, Sota! Hence my solution – MANBAG – GEODUCKS.
Two things to note here: 1) Manbag is an accepted word, go figure; and 2) Geoducks is pronounced “gooey ducks”, which, as I pointed out before, makes it all the more fun!

          1. Same. I can hardly believe manbag was accepted which ended my over an hour long slog. Also, I am shocked anyone else found this solution.
Mudbanks, agendums and gumbo were the only words I remember.

  1. Glad to hear you found it tough. Best I could do was SUB-BANDAGES-SMOCK before throwing in the towel.

And BANKAGES was accepted 🤷🏻‍♀️ but got me nowhere

    1. Well, you my friend, certainly make me feel a whole lot better!
After spending a good 4 hours struggling, I came up with: DOGS – SUBMAN- NECK….

  2. First I tried BANDAGES, but couldn’t match it with anything. Then I tried GEODUCKS (one of my favourite words) and successfully matched it with SUBMAN for a 14/2, but then, as I do, I checked to see if SUBMAN is a playable Scrabble word, and it is not, so I rejected that and moved along. It was a short step from SUBMAN to OMBUDSMAN — another one of my favourite words — and Boom! Official solution after about three minutes.

Someone once told me, by the way that English has only three Swedish loan words: ombudsman, smorgasbord, and something else that I can’t remember (maelstrom, maybe?). I have always wondered whether there are only three. Seems implausible to me.

      1. That’s an interesting list. It may have been gravlax. Several of the others seem to have been inspired by Swedish but are not true loan words, as their spellings are different (e.g., akvavit, orientering); others I doubt have ever passed the lips of an English-speaker (torsk); and at least one seems just plain wrong (tungsten). But I am not a trained linguist, so what do I know??

    1. Webster’s first example when I looked it up:
“The insurance company’s ombudsman was able to resolve the problem.”

No 2 word solution for me, but now I know 2 new words.

  3. Official. Pleasantly surprised at how quickly it revealed itself.

Randomly tried -SMAN as a suffix and boom there it was.

  4. Not sure I’ve ever heard of an ombudsman or a geoduck before so I didn’t really have a hope in hell. Glad I gave up after an hour or so and went for a three: DANCEBANDS SMOG GUCK. I even had GECKO at one point but couldn’t find a partner for it.

  5. GEODUCKS – SUBMAN, which seems clunky. I did briefly consider MANBAG but thought it had no chance of actually being accepted, so didn’t even try.

I did find DANCEBANDS – SMUG – GECKO and enjoyed my own little Geico commercial: green spokeslizard singing a la Sinatra in front of a 40’s orchestra. Always interesting, the images conjured up by random word combos.

  6. Didn’t see it today. Tried in vain to make DOCKAGE and DAMAGES work. I did find BUSMAN, but didn’t think to try the reverse SUBMAN. Oh well, tomorrow is another day!

  7. Official. Almost gave up several times, but came to the conclusion that figuring out a play for the “U” was key (after being stymied by BANDAGES – SMOCK). Trying combinations with BUD finally triggered OMBUDSMAN, and coming up empty with NECK…OG finally got me to notice GECKO. Tough solve today!
