Oh, darn it! I thought I’d honour South Asia by going with JUNGLEFOWL when I saw it was a possibility, LICHEN leapt out, so I immediately had JUNGLEFOWL-LICHEN…

I mean, Good for you Irim. I continue to marvel extent of your vocabulary I kind of think you’re something out of Greek mythology – half human half dictionary. I did actually manage to get this one by pure chance. There was so little one could do with the J. Tried jungleful first. Then the homonym. But definitely not a word in my vocabulary and had my day been busier there’s no way if have solved it. Took about 2 hours. Sam, You got a timeout for this one.

It’s just luck & private school, I reckon. I saw ‘JUNGLE’ and I’m a big fan of eliminating as many letters as possible, so took a chance. Also in this case, Zoology major helped. I knew it was probably considered two words in real life, but what did I have to lose? Yeah, and also, I did love looking in the dictionary for fun as a kid.
I always look for the one that will get out the most troublesome letters first – sometimes that has cost me! ‘Q’ is a favourite letter, so I really wanted P out of my way & X and Y tucked away, and paroxysm did that.
And funnily enough, I DID love reading Greek mythology. *grins*

Spotted both JUNGLE and FOWL but never thought to link the two (JUNGLE being the longest word I could come up with starting with J). In short, two fails in a row.

Danced around with JUNGLE and FOWL and a few others, but never thought to link the two. By the way, I ran it past a word-check site, which it won’t let me mention for some reason, and it wasn’t valid on any of the ten common word games they cover. Hope nobody else wasted too much time on this one, glad I bailed when I did.
OA fairly quickly, but, when I checked, I discovered that JUNGLEFOWL is not a PSW, nor is it in the OED. It is a standard term in ornithology, though, so I’m not sure why not.
Yes, I was going to say, I wonder if having a zoology degree is why I tried it as one word. Not sure why it’s not an option in the dictionaries…but if not, that was a nasty play on Sam’s part and he has to do better.

I saw jungle very quickly but it would never have dawned upon me to attach it to fowl. Because I love birds, I know that in their pursuit of food, they will fly from area to area in search of food.
Moreover, many birds are migratory. For example my lovely Baltimore Orioles spend about half the year in the tropics (Central and South America) but return north for their breeding season. I attract many to my feeders by using grape jelly.
A friend of mine uses grape jelly in her lasagna recipe. Very tasty. 🙂
Mea Culpa! I have within the last few minutes learned that there is a species of about 4 chicken like birds from Southeast Asia called Jungle fowl. Because of where I live, I have never heard of them.
When I saw Jungle Fowl as one of the OAs, I thought it was a generic term for those birds who make the jungle their primary habitat.
Well, okay then!
OA. saw JUNGLE very early, then tried JUNGLEFUL which then led to JUNGLEFOWL, which I was sure would be the OA since Sam loves using bird names. A quick solve today even though I’ve never actually heard the word before, so I might have gotten a little lucky
