    1. My solution as well. Working from the X, which couldn’t be joined to an E or be worked into any TOXIC kind of situation, there weren’t too many choices. UXORIAL also happened, but wasn’t really all that promising.

    2. Oh, good! Like DW, I found LUXURIATE but no partner for it. Had to leave LB at threes today:

      Protocol – Luxuriate – Etch
      Uxorial – Letch – Herp

  1. PARACHUTAL – LEIOTHRIX. Quite possibly among my top five favourite solutions of all time. The puzzle accepted both words, but neither is a PSW, so by my own self-imposed rules, I fail. But PARACHUTAL is in the OED (God knows who would ever use it; I tried it on a lark), and the Red-billed LEIOTHRIX is a gloriously beautiful exotic bird here in Japan!

    1. Wow that is quite the find. Stuff it and put it on the mantle kind of find. Very nice. I luxuriated with the rest.

  2. Spent too long trying with OXTAIL. Pity didn’t get PARACHUTE as may have tried OXLIP-tho didn’t know the word! Was also trying with PIXILATE but no joy.

  3. Yes, oxlips feature in a speech by Oberon in a Midsummer Night’s Dream:
“I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
    Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine.”
However, I failed today. Only got as far as CHAPEL-LUXURIATE (couldn’t use the ‘O’). Hats off to everyone who found PAROCHIAL. 👏🏾👏🏾

    1. Thanks for the oxlip reference from MN Dream. Enjoyed reading that and will treat it as a refresher, along with eglantine!

  4. Parochial Luxuriate here as well. I worked with parachute early on but never found the match! I also worked with elixir, but no soap!!

  5. OA

    Anagrams, Anadromes, Palindromes *
    LARI | LIRA | RIAL | ARIL | LAIR | LIAR | RAIL
    LEPTA | PALET | PATEL | PETAL | PLATE | TEPAL
    RETOUR | ROTURE | ROUTER | TOURER
    PAPERER | PREPARE | REPAPER

    * Repaper is a palindrome. Lira and Aril are anadromes to each other, as are Liar and Rail.

  6. Struck out after struggling far too long with LUXURIATE (kudos to those who found PAROCHIAL!), PIXILATE, and PROLIX, which seemed like the kind of esoteric word Letterboxed’s editor would choose. I had a hunch early on that this would be one of those puzzles with a deeply unsatisfying answer, but kept at it to my own detriment. OXLIP? BOOOOOOOO! 😖

    1. The Letters of Lavender

I can’t understand why the editor would choose an OA that is unsatisfying. Smh. It took me some time to find PAROCHIAL for LUXURIATE.

  7. Only 22 comments… Says a lot.
Sadly I’m not up with my Eurasian primulas. Thought for sure I was on the money with luxuriate – kudos to those who managed to pair it.
Note to NYT: Make it a challenge for sure, but don’t make it ridiculously obscure to the point of sucking the life out of the game. 🙁
OT, Digits is going soon. Hope there’s a fun replacement.

    1. Bernie Horowitz

Never even heard of Digits before, and now it’s gone, which suits me fine. I get anxious just THINKING about solving a math puzzle!

  8. Oxtail yes, but oxlip… huh? Just out of my depth so settlef for a 3 today.

Too bad about Digits. Good old-fashioned fear of math I suppose.

  9. Finally landed on PAROCHIAL – LUXURIATE after finding LUXURIATE right off the bat but moved on to HELIX and then found PARACHUTE but had no idea OXLIP was a thing. Sometimes I have to scratch my head on what Mr. Ezersky comes up with.

  10. Couldn’t find a partner for ARCHITECTURAL or PIXILATED or LUXURIATE.

    Kudos for PAROCHIAL!

    I’m with Bernie on OA!

  11. Found RECAPITULATOR right away which left me with only the H and X. Spent way too long trying to find a way to use them, to no avail.
