instantly found the official answer today. Never one to take Yes for an answer, I then wasted quite a lot of time seeking other solutions, to no avail. With EX off the table, and Foxing, Doxing and Oxide seemingly dead ends, Foxhole Enduring feels force-fed. I’ll be interested to see if anyone comes up with a viable alternative.
I went through the exact foxing/doxing/oxide trio too – would love to see if there are any other answers today.

Not many viable options today, but in addition to those already mentioned HUNDREDFOLD – DIGOXIN also works as a longish answer. That much digoxin is sure to give you a heart attack, much as this puzzle does sometimes. As digoxin is derived from the FOXGLOVE plant, I feel the puzzle makers missed an opportunity by leaving out a V!

Stubborn set of letters.
Foxated on FIXHOUND for a long time and missed DIRGEFUL. Finally got the “official” solution. There wasn’t a lot of choice for the letters either side of X!
