      1. Yes, my mistake. Found it, though got distracted by the official answer and mis-posted.
        ITALICIZE – EXHIBITION

    1. Bernie Horowitz

      We should add a Food category to the Bird, Dog, Fish and Marsupial categories. Granted, Birds aren’t real, and the Marsupial group consists entirely of Wombats and Numbats, neither of which has made an appearance lately. (I hope they’re okay!)….

      1. Naturally, I agree with BH. However, if we do add Food, it will be important to acknowledge the overlap among the categories (though I have never tasted NAZGUL).

      2. If it’s to be marsupials, then someone has to speak up for the THYLACINEs. Birds may not be real, but THYLACINES were (they may even be making a comeback).

  1. Also CALZONE-EXHIBIT after failing to get Elizabethan to work (not that it would have been allowed anyway).
    In other news, a cheery conversation with my husband this morning about gravestones: he wants a standard out-of-office reply on his. “And yours will probably just say ‘PIPSQUEAK-RHEUMATOLOGY’!”
    “No,” I said. “Everyone knows the last letter of the first word has to be the first letter of the second word. ‘PIPSQUEAK-KINESTHETIC’, for example.”
    But atually, I’ll settle for ‘Peace at last!’

    1. PAQUET – THICKENS 14/2 would be a more efficient option, but I’m waging a side-bet on
      UIS HAN CQE TPK.
      We’ll be juggling two at LBF tomorrow!

  2. At first I got LAICIZE – EXHIBITION, which is (or should be) the Vatican punishment for streaking priests, but that struck me as not likely to be the shortest solution, so I landed on the official, which also had nice TI.

    I didn’t spot much in the way of birds in this array today: TIT, NENE, and, if you allow double letters, COOT. But neither did I spend much time looking, because I must go meet my brother to look for real birds! I hope I have better luck there than here. (Yes, Bernie, I know birds aren’t real.)

  3. CALZONE – EXHIBITION Such a quick “Eureka” moment, I didn’t stop to consider paring it down. Let the morning begin.

    1. My exact experience as well, and after striking out the previous two days, I’ll happily shrug off the inefficiency!

    2. Right, me too. Worked off of the -TION suffix, and (after failing with ECXITATION—despite the good vibrations it was giving me) ended up pairing EXHIBITION with CALZONE.

  4. Official, through ANTI-, -ATION, EXOTIC(IZE), EXOTICA, ALEBENCH, EXCITANT, [(ZEALANT)], ANTIBIOTIC, BELCH, BATON, NEXT, EXHIBITION, COALIZE (COALIZE – EXHIBITION is also a 17/2). An elegant solution, neatly steering clear of ANTI-s, -ATIONs & -IZEs but I, too, don’t know what to make of the authors’ recent infatuation with comestibles.

    17½ (up there with my personal bests) at LBF with 7/12 letters guessed rightly. Let’s just try a new one:
    CPO LUA RIY SDT
    and see what we get tomorrow. It’s a fun & easy one with a great variety of solutions (for anyone who might feel today’s puzzle flew by just too fast).

  5. 4.2.23

    Pairs:
    =========================
    CALZONE—EXHIBIT
    LAICIZE—EXHIBITION
    ITALICIZE—EXHIBITION
    =========================

    Triple: non-minimal
    =========================
    BEZEL—LICHT—TAXON
    =========================

    Quad: minimal at 15/4️
    =========================
    ZILCH—HON—NEXT—TAB
    =========================

    Some found words:
    ABELIAN, ANTHELION, ANTIBIOTIC, BENZENE, CHELATION, EXCITATION, EXCITON, HELIACAL, HELICAL, NOTATION, OXALIC.

    New word: LICHT

    Comments: Very tight set of letters. No symmetry found in Pairs, Trips, or Quads. If EXHIBITIONAL was accepted, then LAICIZE—EXHIBITIONAL would be a symmetric pair. Rhyming also appears to be difficult today. 🙁

  6. Official here and quicker than yesterday’s by far! In addition to tech words, the prevalence of international foods and martial arts is noted. No one-shy’s today although I did try to get BENZENE to pair with something and briefly tried NALAXONE, but to no avail. Happy Spring everyone!

  7. I never think of foreign food words like BULGOGI or CALZONE. Ended up with a 3 today. BANAL LITHE EXOTICIZE. Really thought EXOTICIZE would have a pair but, alas, no.
