PLIGHTTROUBADOUR
Official – relieved to get one quickly after a string of failures!
Me too, there have been some tricky ones lately
Official, once I had learned how to spell the T word…
Same here! I was spelling it wrong so many ways. Has to Google it. Ha.
Got the official answer quickly again, yesterday and today, after mostly only getting 3-word solutions lately. Couldn’t believe I got it right away!
From Woody Guthrie to Kendrick Lamar, and so many more before, between, and after…
(I thought it was really fun to use the word troubadour, but thought it’s inefficiency would rule it out as the official. Liked the TI though so came to post. Surprised again.)
Realizing and recognizing the narrow nationalistic and biographical nature of my TI examples above. Would truly enjoy hearing from others: what artists came to mind when considering the official answer.
James Taylor and Joni Mitchell.
Yes, TK! And for another “troubadouress”: Lady Day (Billie Holiday)
What does TI mean, please?
Thematic integrity.
Oh, thank you! Wasn’t sure if the second letter was a capital ’i’ or a lowercase ’L’. I thought perhaps ’thematic link’? Isn’t there pretty much always a thematic link? I’m reminded of one of the games on the much-loved (by me!) BBC Radio 4 programme (the ‘antidote to panel games’), “I’m sorry, I haven’t a clue”, where contestants have to find links between seemingly random words. Worth a listen, it’s hilarious!
DROPLIGHT – TUBA
Bought-tripodal.
Similarly UPLIGHT-TROUBADOUR
Bob Dylan in Greenwich Village?
FWIW, I consider Tom Petty a poet and troubadour…
Had both Uplight Troubadour and the marginally less inefficient official Light Troubadour. One is a somewhat dismissive description of the singer, the other a tech instruction for their crew.
I will note, I think I may have been the originator of the “Thematic Integrity/TI” concept here!
That was supposed to say “Plight Troubadour”, of course.
Yeah, Tom Petty is another great shout, what a genius he was (and still is in a sense)! ‘Refugee’ was the track through which I made his acquaintance in the dim & distant 1977(ish?). And I would urge anyone who’s still unfamiliar to have a look at the poignant story behind the ‘I Won’t Back Down’ tune, the circumstances under which it was composed, and, essentially, the deeper meaning it encapsulates.
I find his spare, colloquial yet elegant lyrics deeply emotional.
“God, it’s so painful, Something that’s so close
Is still so far out of reach…”
Official ✅
13/2.DROPLIGHT
TUBA
Ditto!
Loudon Wainwright III
I almost gave up at RIBALD-DROUGHT. I so wanted ‘PIBALD’ to be an alternative spelling of piebald, but no. Worked through TURD, BAR, PUB, TULIP, LIBIDO and ORBITAL. And then I saw TROUBADOUR, and went with UPLIGHT-TROUBADOUR. (Troubadour just makes me think of Blackadder and Baldric.)
“Brave, brave Sir Robin”….
Of course! Monty Python, another favourite!
And there was much rejoicing.
DROPLIGHT-TABULAR
BROUGHT – TRIPODAL. Similar to TK but left an extra R in.

(TOP)LIGHT too!
First DROPLIGHT – TUGBOAT (I should have seen TUBA staring me in the face), then BOUGHT – TRIPODAL.
Today’s birds: OILBIRD, PARULA, BULBUL, DODO, PIPIT, PIPIPI, TIT, GALAH, and the generic RAPTOR.
With the double parlor rule + just allowing it as a -bird, can we include BOOBIRD? 😀
Also, as tragic as it is to think about, does POULARD (a hen purposely spayed and fattened for the slaughter) count?
😄
I got UPLIGHT – TAGBOARD, not knowing if the latter would be accepted.
Good one. I missed ‘tagboard’ somehow.
DROPLIGHT TABU, an alternative to TUBA.
I just played around and apparently ABUD is also accepted? So
ABUD – DROPLIGHT
Plight Troubadour
HIGHTOP – PLUGBOARD
Borrowing Mark’s pair to find an alternative
Official for me–
thinking about “The Plight of the Troubadour” as some kind of medieval scene, perhaps from
Bergman’s “Seventh Seal?”
😄 to Jill
bought – tripodal
I’m pretty sure this is the longest I’ve ever been in lockstep with the official answer (today’s is the sixth in a row). A kind and versatile letter set that was bound to provide a gateway to lots of nice solutions -not least PLIGHT – TROUBADOUR (I suppose Leonard Cohen would also tick that particular box, apart from the ones already mentioned). Other finds along the way: PARBOIL, DROUGHT, ABOUGHT, BROUGHT, BRIGHT, ALIGHT, BLIGHT, UPLIGHT, BROAD, and BOARD.
Another tough day at the office with regards to LBF; an all-time low of 3½, in fact, with just 5 letters correctly guessed. Blimey, let’s try our hand with
NFH AOD GLI SPU.
Signing off on a high note, however, as I have another bird to chip in to DW’s collection: the DOUGHBIRD!
Official here, and a rather attractive—if not quite symmetrical—design across the box.
Plugboard-Dight
Official. I fell asleep and woke up with the answer, after almost succeeding with Brought Tripod,,,
Bought tripodal. Was pleasantly surprised to see tripodal was accepted.
Kudos to P who got a 13/2
Droplight-Tuba
Dw has their birds so thought i would go on a little fish run—- PIG GAR ROUGH HALIBUT TROUT TURBOT TOAD DAB. And for bonus points Oscar also a fish
UPLIGHT — TROUBADOUR
Thank you for the conversations today! My day went differently than expected and I wasn’t able to participate, but enjoyed reading the thoughts just now.
I sure needed to trust my initial reaction to this one a bit more. While GLAZE (along with, maybe, TOXIC) was the very first one to bleep on my radar, I took a long, meandering route to eventually spot its obvious pairing. A disproportionately brief log of finds -given the time I had to invest: TAXING, LOGIC, -ATION, ULEXITE, AUXIN, LUXATE, EXOTOXIN, and ZEALOT.
LBF score: 5½ (7/12 letters correct). I’ll keep the same one going for tomorrow (unless I’m able to create any new ones as the day wears on):
NFH AOD GLI SPU.
