Nice one Mark! Can always rely on you!
Thanks Ben. I then searched for minimal triples (14/3) but found none today. That’s a bit unusual. I’m running the Quads now out of curiosity (15/4). ☕☕
CAT 🐈, CHINCHILLA² 🐹, CORAL 🐚, FALCON 🦅, FINCH 🐦, FROG 🐸, GILA monster 🦎, GOAT 🐐 ♑, GORILLA² 🦍, LION 🦁 ♌, LOON² 🦆, ORC 👹, ORCA 🐋, RACCOON² 🦝, RAT 🦝
² double-lettered
I’m adding more animal names to my database this week. ☕
Oops, RAT should be 🐀.
😄
FALCON – NIGHTJAR
I don’t think they are related, but I did find this description:
“The body shape of nightjars is reminiscent of falcons, with long, pointed wings and long tails.”
This OA was a delightful find.
I have heard of nightjars referred to as nighthawks? We may have to wait to have it all sussed out by our resident expert, if they are so inclined (no pressure). I found my own brief internet search quickly outpaced me. But I remember being thrilled the first time I heard a whip-poor-will call.
Nighthawks are members of the nightjar family. I’m not sure where you are based, MVUA, but we have three species of nighthawk here in North America, of which the aptly-named Common Nighthawk is by far the most widespread. But we have other nightjars, too, such as the Whip-poor-will and Chuck-will’s-widow, both of which have onomatopoeic names for their songs.
OA for me today!
and me.
Me also
FLACON-NIGHTJAR
Same!
Me too. I feel very stupid not to have seen the OA. Found the nightjar fairly quickly, took an age to sort out the rest. 🤦🏽♀️
I love the OA. Shades of JUNIPER-ROSEMARY. At least this one thing makes me smile today.
FLACON-NIGHTJAR for me very quickly, but I prefer the OA. It has great TI and dramatic tension too (for the nightjar).
FALCON – NIGHTJAR lickety-split! How nice to have two types of bird in a solution! 🙂 If I have time later today, I’ll come back and generates the complete list in today’s array.
As soon as I found the OA, I thought of you, DW! It’s like they designed it for you.
That was so kind of Sam! I’ll stop whinging about his word list for at least a couple of days. 😉
We were all smiling and thinking DW as we typed the oa.
It’s nice to be remembered! 🙂
🐦ARACARI, CARACARA, CHACHALACA, CHAT, CHILIA, COCHOA, FALCON, NIHOA FINCH, INCA, IORA, NIGHTJAR, RAIL, THORNTAIL, CHOCO TROGON 🐦🐦 CHAFFINCH, CHIFFCHAFF, COOT, LOON
Great list! Thank goodness you didn’t pick today to take a day off!
😂
Roll the ball.

Ok, you got me on that one. 😉
That palm tree threw me off.
Hahaha
I can’t believe that I got the OA. Never heard of NIGHTJAR. Today’s puzzle was one of the hardest ever for me. Only solved it when I randomly put NIGHT and JAR together, completely expecting it to not be a word. Pure luck that it was a word. I assumed, when it was accepted, that it was maybe some sort of chamber pot. Never would have guessed it was a bird.
Ditto! Happily stumbled onto this after giving up on JARGON, JAILOR.
falchion- nightjar
I ended up yielding with nightjar in my pocket. I could not see it.
Conflation – Nightjar didn’t work because of TI and I couldn’t get anything going.
Imma be mad all day.
Didn’t find it but I love the OA today. My favourite so far.
Easily my hardest ever. I finally settled on a 4 word solution 7 hours after starting this puzzle.
JARGON-NIGHT-TALC-CALF
How humbled I am.
I searched for Quads totaling 15 letters earlier but found none, so don’t feel bad. 🙂
Falcon / nightjar
OA three in a row
OUR AVIAN FRIENDS
–(October 11, and the cormorant)
Inside the kingdom “animal”
That class of aves, so special.
Our feathered friends, each one is true
A cormorant’s grunt, an inca’s coo,
A tiny thorntail, shimmering
Trogon’s vermiculated wing,
The rails, across the world in sight,
Some are flightless, some have flight,
A nightjar’s churring call at dusk
A chiffchaff’s triple song for lust,
Each one has its natural reach,
Each one has something to teach,
The chachalaca (doesn’t preen)
Always heard before it’s seen.
To see the urban falcons dive
Proves cities help keep birds alive.
The wild lake loon’s moaning call
Helps keep us humble, one and all.
♥️
Struck out today, but was wise enough to not search too long (had high hopes for JARGON at first).
Never heard of NIGHTJAR, so this one was a no-go from the start. 😒
Ditto. JARGON and JAILOR took up way too much of my time. Never heard of NIGHTJAR and not lucky enough to stumble onto it.
