The answers are:
BACKBONESSHOWING
Backswings-shone slightly better at 15-2
Not too hard to improve on the official 16/2 answer. Here’s one at 13/2:
Wingbacks – Shoe. There are probably others.
Along similar lines there’s Backswings – Shoe at 14/2… Maybe there’s even a one-word answer? Somehow this combination of letters looks more promising than usual for finding that Holy Grail.
I liked backings – snowshoe
Backhoes – swing
13/2
Showbags – Sicken
Not pretty, but it works
Hogbacks-Swine. 13/2.
Backhoes-Swing. 13/2
Great work, Bob, PJ, etc., with all those fine 13/2 answers! “Hogbacks – Swine” shows particular thematic strength.
I wonder why the official answer is so deficient today. Puzzlemasters trying to make us feel smarter so we’ll keep coming back?
Also kudos to PJ. Backhoes do in fact swing.
I came up with BACKHOES-SWING too, but I think there is a nice wordplay to showing backbone. (Maybe they wanted to send a message to officials at COP26.)
Cobwebs
Shacking
I first found backswing and shoes for 14/2 but then reworked it for backwings and shoe for 13/2. Pretty easy today.
Ha! I wondered whether Backwings would have been an accepted word, vs Wingbacks. Asked and Answered!
My mistake…it was Wingbacks…not backings. Sorry for the blunder.

That’s too bad. Seems like Wingbacks should be a word!
