        1. Does anyone ever actually use the word(s) SPRUIK(S)?
The article Mark posted (hit View Entry for the verb entry) seems to show that it started in Australia but has been steadily growing in popularity since the 1890’s, but I can’t remember right now ever hearing it on the news or seeing it in print.
From its definition it seems that it should be a very commonly used word – I may be SPRUIKING now!

          1. I never heard of it either McBee, but was happy to add it to my vocabulary. 🙂

I’m also using OED more lately for LB checks, although still fond of Merriam.

          2. FOXYAILS-SPRUIK for me.

Didn’t know Spruik was an Australian word, being Australian payed off today.

          3. Hey Mark!
your right, Spruik is a nice “new” word for us to use.

I’m basically lazy so i DDG a word that I don’t know and usually DDG suggests adding the word “definition” after whatever word I’m looking up – it’s easy just to click that suggestion. Sometimes after that I’ll add “oed” to bring the Oxford result(s) closer to the top.
I wonder if i should use “mw” or “m-w” in the place of “oed” to advance the Merriam-Webster results?

  1. Radioactive Flower

I only got FOXTAIL – my second word found next to OXTAIL. And, this is my first encounter with LARKSPUR. And, there is no chance I can invent it from the leftovers of FOXTAIL.

I only just spent 30 minutes this time before giving up. Very discouraging array.

    Peace!
    💜

    1. Same. Got FOXTAIL(S) and ran with SURF before and SKIP after! So close! PROPOSAL(S) was another word but getting a second word with an X, F and K in it without an E was interesting!

    2. Hey RF – you’re not the only one that “flunked” this one – and when I first saw it I thought it would be easy because not many english words have an “X”.
But he made it tricky by making it a medium length word – 7 letters for the OA – and I seem to have a real problem seeing those. Longer words that leave 4 or fewer unused letters I seem to do better with.

But what I want to know is how does he keep coming up with unique/ semi-unique solutions?

    3. Very similar experience. I kept going back and forth between FOXTAIL(S) and FORKLIFT(S), as both seemed to be strong OA candidates. But LARKSPUR? Gimme a break.

My Spidey senses started tingling that this one might be B.S. after about 20 minutes, but I kept going… I wish there was a way to tell when the solution is going to be THIS esoteric. Like maybe Ezersky could just post a big flaming poop emoji next to the title… 🔥💩🔥

  2. Radioactive Flower

    Word Play:

    (5-) (7-letters):

    (_ _oo_) (_ _ _ _on_)

Hint: It is mined and traded illegally from Africa.

      1. Radioactive Flower

        Hey, PGGIE,

        Two thumbs up! 👍👍
        Wow! You got it!
        BLOOD DIAMOND, indeed! Yay!!! 🤓😉

            Hey, Mr.DAREDAVEL,

            Two thumbs up! 👍👍

WOW! You got it! Congrats! Yay!!!
            🤗😉

            CAMOUFLAGE – ENJOY.

    1. Not seeing it today. I came up with JOYFUL — LEGACY leaving the M&N and that has nothing to do with African hunting strategy!

      1. Radioactive Flower

        Hey, Sir BILL DUFFIN,

        Huhuhu…🥴😵‍💫

        There’s a next time…🤗😊

          1. Hey RF 🌺!
Art Linkletter was an old-time comedian and talk show host who started on radio and then moved or continued his very popular show “House Party with Art Linkletter” to television.
Part of that show was a segment where Art would interview children – it was always so funny! That part of the show was called “Kids Say the Darndest Things”. Many years later Bill Cosby hosted a similar show by the same name.

  3. POSTFIXAL — LARKSPUR

I only came up with the latter because I used to stay in Larkspur Landing, CA.

  4. OA after finally running down larkspur. Oddly enough, I used to live in San Rafael, CA and took the bus and ferry out of Larkspur but never bothered to find out the meaning of the name: “(noun) an annual Mediterranean plant of the buttercup family…” Happy to have learned something new today and STILL have half a cup of coffee left to savor!

    1. Hey Susan – glad you posted this – otherwise i’d gone on thinking a larkspur was a thorny bird 🦅 or perhaps the part of his foot he uses to spur himself faster.
      I really wasn’t thinking “flower”.

    1. Also fell short with FORKLIFTS – SURTAX. Then FOXTAILS – SPURT (no K). But now I know more about larkspur than I did before.

      1. So learning about larkspur may be a plus.

And I expect forklifts do incur some sort of surtax somewhere, so I’m scoring a point for TI 🙂

  5. OA… after too much time spent on it to honestly confess here!

Being botanically illiterate is my excuse; never heard of either foxtail or larkspur plants. Solution came through obsessive-compulsive compounding of shorter words 🙂
