I have to say that SQUIRM(Y) just like SQUIB is very easy to find. I’ve been using them as solutions a handful of times.

          1. Squirmy Vowels!

Some hilarious combinations of words many of which have my imagination running riot!

    1. Stuck on REVIEWS/OVERVIEWS – SOLILOQUY (Couldn’t place the ‘M’) / SQUIRMY (the ‘L’) – so close!

  1. The time has come for me to leave this group. I’m sick of the cheats (viz. Mark et al) who spoil all the fun. Back in Sota’s day (cf. Jill, Bernie, DW, DHW, AJDETROIT…) it was so much more convivial. To those of you who use your brain cells and not your software, I salute you! Sayonara, folks, and thanks for all the words!

    1. Preempting the inevitable, I’ll quote Sota21 from 12 March 2023 in response to Mark’s online harassment: I have a huge amount of experience in relation to obtrusive neighbors, and have concluded that the way to deal with them is to plug my ears (if I have to) and, at all costs, avoid getting as nosy and noisy as they are – I would definitely not contemplate moving house on their own terms. So they can carry on clowning about if they so wish – without me. I’d just hope that (for their own sake) they find a way of moving away from the dark cloud that’s parked itself above their heads…

      1. Here’s the full, unedifying exchange from 12 and 13 March 2023:
Mark: That’s “the pot calling the kettle black”, isn’t it? Or should I say “the bot calling the kettle black”? Gotta admit, human eyes can still beat bot eyes. Either that, or you need better software, because if I can tell, well… oh, by the way, I like how you’re grooming your second bot. Interesting development. Don’t worry, I won’t call it out too soon. I’ll play neutral, like Switzerland, for awhile.

Sota21: Some software that would allow me to maybe work out a shedload of solutions 5 minutes into the puzzle, and then fool around with 2 and 3-letter breakdowns? Is that what you have in mind? Admittedly, such a thing is still foreign to me (and TBH I don’t know that I would be a great fan of it, anyway).

Mark: Yes, like that. But, why do the bot thing? I’m curious, really. And I don’t crawl over to some solving app, hijack solutions, and then masquerade them here. C’mon Sota, tell me why you do the bot thing. I can’t subpoena you, so it’s voluntary, but wow, I never saw anything like it. I knew you were a gunslinger, of sorts, way back then. I just think it’s fair game to call out the fact that Sota21 uses bot technology. I mean why pretend it otherwise. It’s not illegal technically, but in my view, it’s a mild form of deceit. So let it be written.

Sota: I was (& still am) happy that this forum remains relatively immune to social media toxicity and is, generally, a place where far more light than heat is generated. When I was first called a bot, I thought of it as a (backhanded) compliment and opted to soak up the acclaim. Last time I checked, I was a mere mortal human being (& I have the silicon & kevlar tests to prove it ). But I also have a huge amount of experience in relation to obtrusive neighbors, and have concluded that the way to deal with them is to plug my ears (if I have to) and, at all costs, avoid getting as nosy and noisy as they are -I would definitely not contemplate moving house on their own terms. So they can carry on clowning about if they so wish -without me. I’d just hope that (for their own sake) they find a way of moving away from the dark cloud that’s parked itself above their heads…

Mark: Ok, so you’ve come clean then? I really haven’t been sure if I’ve been talking to Sota, or SotaBOT!. But ok, out of fairness, and a sense of sportsmanship, I put forth a truce.

Mark: Hey, Sota, it’s me, your favorite enemy. Don’t worry (and don’t wet your pants like yesterday ), it’s not my life’s mission to expose you. Just wanted to touch base, and see how you’re doing. Were you impacted by that terrible train crash in Athens? You must have heard about it. You work in retail, as I recall, right? It was all over the news here in the US. But I digress… I really wanted to make sure you know my name, since you haven’t used it in soooo loooong. It’s MARK. We’ve been hanging out for a year already, so what the heck? I’ve learned that’s part of the bot strategy, to build coalitions from your feigned friendships, while at the same time, trying to isolate your formidable foes. Fascinating! Kind of like politics. Can you actually control the personalities of your bots? Incredible. I’ll need to read up on that type of software sometime. Do you create your own programs, or do you use off-the-shelf solutions? I’m thinking the latter; because if you were that talented to write your own bot software, well then the sky’s the limit I guess. It does seem to be a little rough around the edges; however, I am glad that your second bot has, at least, a more dignified persona. Not like that bratty, opinionated version one. Was is male, female, maybe other? Oh, yes, that’s right, we make the rules as we go along. I’ve compiled some comical exchanges from not that long ago. I’m not trying to be mean, or vindictive, it’s not my nature, usually. Although I do inherit my bad qualities from my late father (Irish Catholic). Impulsiveness. Stubbornness. Unyieldingness. I do think however that the newer users of this forum have a right to know what they’re dealing with. So I shall bring it to the forefront, from time to time, as I deem fit. There is another idea I wanted to share with you. It’s a theme! We know that you’ve always stressed efficiency over any sort of thematic consideration (that’s another chapter btw, with lots of fun examples), but I hope you’ll kindly indulge me. Have you ever read about those pure white shepherd dogs? You know, in Central Italy. They’re raised from puppies, purposefully, within the flock. Within a year or so, he’s tearing out from his territory, and directly attacking the wolf. Can you see it? Pretty cool imagery I think. Bet you never counted on that shepherd dog a year ago. Okay, enough for today, I don’t want to get too cocky (yeah, remember that word too?).

        1. The irony that he is accusing someone else of the very thing he does himself is not lost on me. Then again, deflection, hypocrisy, subterfuge and downright thuggery are all acceptable in the US nowadays, aren’t they?

          1. I ran across this site when I would get stumped and was trying to see what I’d missed, or was wondering why LB wouldn’t accept words that showed up in most dictionaries. It never occurred to me to use a dictionary or any outside source to help find a solution, though I’d occasionally use one to check spelling. etc. It became pretty obvious early on that some people were utilizing other resources to come up with so many obscure multiple solutions. I really don’t mind if that’s their approach… it’s just a word game, and if that’s how you expand your vocabulary, fine by me. The only thing about it that’s ever bugged me is the occasional smugness or condescension, and I’ll even chalk that up to the possibility that it was unintentional or that I maybe read to much into a comment where there was really no slight intended.

          2. That’s false. You’ve left out major elements of that story. That individual was pretending to be someone else, and did not reveal to the group that it was their bot that was behind their witty replies. Many people were duped by that. I’ve always explained that I wrote a program to crack the game. I was upfront, and have actually shared the inner workings of it here many times. If you read from days prior, and after, to those hand-picked excerpts, you would have seen that their bots logical mistakes were evident, and that the person utilizing the bot actually admitted to doing so. Why did you leave those out? Because you did your research in a biased manner.

        2. TLDR. I only come here after I solve or surrender so it’s not as if I can cheat by seeing solves that I might have missed. I don’t care if someone posts 25 solutions that they found using AI. Most of them include scientific gobbledygook that I’d never land on if I were locked in solitary confinement for 10 years. If one comes here only after solving or quitting, what difference does it make if the see someone post computer-driven solutions?

          1. I confess to using scientific gobbledygook like chemical compounds (yesterday I used POLYACETYLENE) just because they are familiar to me. I admit that chemical nomenclature is a language of its own, and maybe should not be allowed, but if LB accepts some of them, I will use them for a solve. At the end of the day, it’s just a fun puzzle.

        3. Sorry to see you go, FISHCAKE. I’ve seen what you’re talking about several times over as a bystander, so I didn’t need to be convinced. The bigger and smarter person is the person who walks away from a fight where there’s nothing to be gained, especially when its sole purpose is the gratification bullies get from bullying.

BTW, my apprehension that I should gain the attention of the Eye of Sauron almost kept me from leaving this comment, but then I remembered that I’m mostly just a wallflower who stops in once a day after I’ve solved the puzzle just to see if others’ brains came up with what mine came up with and see if there was anything mine glaringly missed, most days not even leaving a comment, and that I very rarely ever go back and look at prior conversations on prior days, meaning I probably won’t know even if the Eye of Sauron does turn towards me😂😂😂, so I landed on that I shan’t let you go without an “I get it,” a “thanks for all the funny wit,” and a “fare thee well.”

          1. Oh, I just want to put it out there that there is at least one other person (probably just one but I can’t know for sure) who has the username BENJAMIN and regularly leaves comments. I know this because I see his comments all the time and know I didn’t make them. So if there’s to be any backlash, please make sure you direct it at me and not him. How that’d be possible, I have no idea since our username’s are identical such that even I can’t tell them apart. Nevertheless…

    2. Sorry to see you go, Fishcake. I’ve been here (sans software) with Sota et al and enjoyed your across-the-pond (yes?) perspective and weirdly charming screen name.

      1. I am so sorry to see you go, Fishcake! I was blissfully unaware of any of this interplay among you, Mark, and the ever so much missed Sota21. How unfortunate! I’m sorry I found out.
I have no moral objections to clues and hints and word finders; I’m only nterested in the vocab and the themes, and this is, after all, just a word puzzle, an amusing diversion. Why look for reasons to get all worked up? Surely there are better things to get all worked up about? Especially in these times? Well, people are mysterious, our motives and personal issues largely unknowable even to ourselves, much less to anyone else. Sigh.

        1. I regret what has transpired, Bernie. For you, and anyone else, who may want to know the truth, about that individual, from that timeframe, and about the veil from which they were operating behind, I can be found easily on social media. The truth is hurtful sometimes, as we all know, so I chose not to reveal it here. I can substantiate information, even up to the present day, even to what is in plain sight.

          1. Pretty impressive you came up with a program to find so many words! I mean that sincerely. I play this to expand my knowledge of words. Sometimes that knowledge is good, sometimes it’s no better than a carrot stick. I understand your side and Fishcakes side. I take things at face value.

          2. How are we to get a hold of you, Mark? I am interested to hear your side of things, but have no idea how to find you on social media.

          1. Truly! What a bunch of children! Just solve the damn puzzle before you look at the answers. Why all the drama? 😞

          2. Mark, I really do not know what I am calling? As I am only programmed for simple attempts at humor.
(Can’t deny that I’m curious though.)

But for real; what you said about this comment thread being a lot to have coming at you? I’m sure thats true. I don’t wish it on you, and I don’t think you should be too concerned about me. (if this comment was even for me; I’m not certain). Regardless, I hope you are alright and that fishcake is alright too.

    3. If anyone is using software to complete a game, why play? I’m not pointing fingers at Mark or anyone else. I spend 10 minutes maximum trying to find the two word answer and if I can’t get it, I come here. (Most of the time I’m saying something like “geeeeez how could I not see that”. I will miss you, Fishcake, even though I have no clue who you are. I understand your thoughts.

      1. No offense taken, but let me please respond:
It’s because I derived satisfaction from building something, from scratch, from my own efforts. It is this point that I believe Fishcake did not appreciate at all. The proverbial “Easy Button” where one just presses and has all the solutions, that is a far cry from I did. I built it. I’m proud of it. I did not “copy” from anybody, from anywhere. It was, and is, my original work.

        1. And Mark somewhere in here I responded to you saying “good job on writing a program from scratch”. I meant that. I often look at your answers and learn from them. I would never mean any harm to anyone with my words.

          1. Thank you Rog, for your words. I can tell you are sincere.

To be accused of (by others) being a cheat and a bully is a lot to take in one day.

I never meant to offend anyone.

I’m a technical person and perhaps my explanations come across in an unintended manner sometimes.

  2. QUO OWE EYES SLIM MILE EVER. Would’ve had it in five, but the M and O were on the same side so I couldn’t do MOVER. But it took QUO!

  3. OVERSWIMS — SQUIRELY

Squirely was a guess as I have never seen it. I found OVERSERIOUS, but LB didn’t take OVERSERIOUSLY. I also played with RESERVOIRS but couldn’t pair it.

  4. FWIW
For people who love solving puzzles and discerning patterns, here’s one I’ve noticed over the years.
Where I live, by February/March the angle of the sun and various forms of precipitation have taken a serious toll on mental health.
It manifests variously as despondency, self-destructive behaviours, lashing out.

March is almost over. Hang in there. It will be better soon.

  5. QUORUMS SWIVELY*

*Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English — “shriveled, withered, shrunken.”

(I love looking up new or old words when playing LB. I realize many are not accepted, but it’s part of the fun. I used to read hefty dictionaries as a child for amusement, the way my brother would read comic books. I devoured them. But I also understand that such pastimes are not to everyone’s taste.)

  6. Glad I got on late today, the collective posters of this site I find to be enjoyable in their personalities knowledge and accomplishments, and we all could use the benefit of the doubt.play for fun, celebrate with others.don’t take yourself too seriously.Fishcake , I hope you’ll reconsider. Btw wheres Richie lately?

  7. I got the OA fairly quickly, like quite a few folks today. I suspect that means that tomorrow’s puzzle is going to be a nightmare.

And my 2c (possibly less) on the above – whatever happened to live and let live? If I’m coming here it’s because I’ve given up on finding the answer my way – and whatever method other people use is entirely up to them and none of my concern.

  8. Since I am still upset by the accusations directed at me today, I feel the need to set the record straight. Fishcake is entitled to his/her opinions, but not the facts. Here are the facts. The person they say I was harassing was, in my mind, on object of my self defense. That individual accused me of using an LB online solving app, which was false, then and now. I have the receipts and that particular person knows the truth, to this day. I would never have said anything if I did not feel threatened initially. The proof is in all those posts from that timeframe, not just a couple cherrypicked out of context, as is so often the case.

I came to this forum years ago, fascinated by this game, with all the secondary adventures that come with it. Vocabulary building, letter patterns, rhyming, triples, quads, and whatever ones imagination can dream up. I started to think of what it would take to generate all solutions, and I set out to build such a system. It took me over a year to design, program, troubleshoot, and perfect. It is one of the best programs I ever did.

I am not the only person to use computer technology to crack word games. Others may not like that approach, but that does not mean that another person should avoid such approaches. After all, as mentioned above, this site is not the “solving site”, it is just a “solution sharing” site. The NYT site is where one plays against a computer system, and the rules are baked into that system.

Lastly, for the record, I recall only one actual exchange I ever had with Fishcake. He/she asked a general question, something along the lines of, “Doesn’t it take the fun out of it to use a computer?” To which I replied “Not when one creates their own software.” I have found that the only people who ask such questions are those who have never written a computer program, and get the satisfaction in seeing it run, and to produce the desired output. It’s a not a right or wrong, it’s just different strokes for different folks.

    Thank you for listening.

    1. Mark:

I have no problem with you using a program to find solutions. I am very impressed, actually, and you should be proud of your achievement! Back in the prehistoric days, I taught myself the C language (way before C++ or C#) by calculating the Black-Schowles function so as to determine the fair price for stock options. Because I had a real goal in mind, it made the programming “fun” because I actually could use the result and show it off. 40+ years later, I still have fond memories of that time. Enjoy yourself and “you do you.” 🙂

  9. OA today, sometimes it pops right out sometimes it’s a struggle. Over the past few years I have enjoyed all the banter, mostly from the sidelines, but I am happy to find like minded word nerds. It makes me sad that some people are feeling bad about this group tonight when it brings me such a pleasant distraction most days. Btw where is radioactive flower these days? Wishing all of us a peaceful night.
