    1. OA after not too long. Took me until today to get BLOCKCHAIN NUMP for yesterday’s one. Glad of a few day streak after a string of recent failures.

        1. Also very close with…
          Quacked – Dorsal (M left)
          Squalor – Rocked (M left)

Thought Masques, Clamors and something ending in -made might work too?

      1. Bernie Horowitz

As so many of us do, JT.

My best effort: Rorquals Smacked the water when they breached, while the black ducks, in a black mood, Quacked Doldrums. Not that those are bad answers, particularly the OA (Doldrums is excellent!), but I must say this puzzle presented unexpected difficulties.

      2. OA for me as well. Had QUACKED right out of the gate. And then struggled for a long time, trying out a number of other Q words, before finally seeing DOLDRUMS.

  1. Radioactive Flower

    RORQUALS -SMACKED.

QUACKED of the OA was the first word I found. And, it’s my first acquaintance of the word DOLDRUMS.

    1. OA in short order and first acquaintance with RORQUALS (more Baleen whales smacking the ocean waters)! Got a little hung up on MUDROCKS* and SQUALOR ( MUDROCK(S) not accepted).

      1. PS – i think you were the first to find
RORQUALS and i think they are much more interesting than the Doldrums, especially when the Rorquals are Smocked! Would love to see a painting of them!

    1. WHITEHOT – TEMPERATURES
Posted for fun because of the heat wave that’s underway here. When I checked it out, White-hot is hyphenated. 🙂

      1. Hey Davel!
i think it is your first one, except minus the extra R … i.e:
        SURPRISES SOMEWHAT

Several good suggestions – we will have to wait until RF wakes back up to find out which he was thinking of …

      2. Radioactive Flower

        Hey, Mr. DAREDAVEL,

Mr. McBEE is right. You overshoot the OA with one letter. You are 99% correct. BRAVO! 🤓😉🤗

        The OA is:

        SURPRISES – SOMEWHAT.
        ☢️🌹

          1. SURPRISERS – people – is a valid word, but my spidey sense was telling me it was a little more than RifF was looking for … 😎

  2. OA … If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck; though it could still be depressed.

  3. CLAQUEURS – SMOKED. We had a musical group at summer camp in Québec, in which most of us played spoons, called “Les Claqueur Boys.” And, yes, several of us did! But I did not. 🚭

  4. Closest I came was Squalors* smacked, but this plural form not acceptable to LB,
*found in Merriam Webster and Dictionary.com.

      1. Also defined in OED:
        1621-
        squalors, in squalor, n.
The state or condition of being physically squalid; a combination of misery and dirt.

    1. Me too.
I actually prefer squalors in the plural form.
Sounds a bit Victorian, like a case of the ‘vapors’. But Dickensian as well.

  5. MACROQUAKES** pairs with SALAD, SCOLD, and probably several others.

I found the first word experimenting with the MACRO- prefix and already knowing that microquakes were real. Evidently, it’s a thing in astronomy—a phenomenon that can occur on neutron stars (if nowhere else).

Don’t know why the relatively simple OA escaped me!

  6. OA after finally abandoning SQUALOR. CLAQUEURS is a new word for me, as well as RORQUALS. Adding to the list 🙂 Off to the other games….

  7. Kept trying Croques —guess I was hungry. Then Macaques seemed promising but dead end. Finding Seldom quickly led to Doldrums and I finished with OA.

  8. OA. QUACKED was the first word I tried, and DOLDRUMS jumped out instantly in the leftovers. Happy to take the quick W.
