Here there are Letter Boxed October 15, 2022 Answers from New York Times Games. Our solutions and answers are 100% valid and accurate. We suggest to try and solve the game by your own before using the help of our website.
Sides of this Letter Box are:
YMOLSAEHTING
The answers are:
ELITISMMAHOGANY
HISTOLOGY – YAMEN 14/2. No thematic integrity, so will keep looking for a bit.
Ran out of time and came up dry looking for something with thematic integrity. Will trust others to succeed where I have failed!
Found Histology, but not Yamen. Ah, well
Official answer today. Found MAHOGANY right away, but pairing it with a word ending in M wasn’t straightforward.
HOLIES—SYNTAGM
13/2
“A sacred linguistic unit.”
I looked up ‘syntagm’ for some clarity.
Fascinating, MARK! Perhaps you’d care to share the thought process that got you there (so that, one day, others can work out such fab solutions). I mean, you went HOLIES and then pondered what the remainder could form, or did SYNTAGM occur first?
I was trying SEMANTOLOGY, SEMATOLOGY, STAT* combos, etc.., then explored the SYN* route.
I learned another word today: ENMESHMENT
Interesting definition and description in the field of psychology:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enmeshment
ENMESHMENTS—STATISTOLOGY
Mark, thanks for yet another new and enticing word!
I’ve just spent the better part of the morning reading about syntagms– the alter-elements to paradigms. It took me a while to find this explanation, which helps to demystify this arcane (and yet ubiquitous) structural concept.

This was very enlightening, Jill; thanks for posting!
Hi Jill. That was a good find! I enjoyed reading the article. Thank you for posting it. It’s pleasing to know that others too, have found this game (LB) to be a springboard into other areas. Lately, I’ve been especially liking the thematic side to the word-pairs we find in this game. They are truly new entities, creating new ideas. Realizing that these pairs might never have been written, spoken, or even connected in thought before is amazing to me. Good stuff!
Making connections and partnerships– the very point of life.
I had OGHAMS – SILENTLY at 14/2
Despite the inefficiencies, quite happy with SHANTIES SEMIOLOGY 17/2
Also found some other stuff that failed:
MEGATONS STYLISH (woah a 15/2 alternative I just found as I was writing this list up but can’t enter as I am an unpaid user so I only have one chance per day)
STYLISH HOGMEN or HOGMAN (Even farmers are hipsters now… only missing an A or E)
MANLIEST TOGS (you have to be Australian to understand that the answer is budgie smugglers and relates to one of our previous prime ministers )
MANTIS SHOES (small footwear for bugs)
ESTIMATIONS SHAMAN (a lot of druids in quantity surveying these days)
NEGATIONS SHAMAN (a rapper name?)
NEGATIONS SHYLY (no M… someone afraid to tell their superior the bad news)
ANTILOGY YES (peak uncertainty)
HONESTLY YAM (a straight-shooter’s answer to the question, “what do yams taste like?”)
SHAMAN NEOLOGY (theological confusion for sure)
NEGOTIATIONS SMILY (better than negotiations frowny)
LONELIEST (unpaired for thematic reasons 😉 )
GEMSTONE
ISHMAEL (illegal but cool find)
HOGSTY (not a hogstay. That’s when you babysit a piglet)
SMILIEST TONY (peak Anthony)
ANTILOGS
GEOLOGY
STONE (^ ha)
ATONEMENTS
OILTIMES (illegal… if you’re a Rockefeller I guess that’s your name for old-times e.g. “It’s been ages! Join our family for dinner. It’ll be just like oiltimes.”.)
HOSTILE
ANYTIME
If anyone can tell me why SMILIEST TONY relates to MANLIEST TOGS (see both entries above) I’ll… I dunno, but you get a reward if you’re not Australian and figure it out 🙂
MEGATONS STYLISH
Hi, HY. I do know the answer, and I would wear it on my shirtfront, but I don’t qualify. I wonder if Putin remembers Tony, but I doubt it.
I canna believe that HOGMANAY was nae accepted.
Nice one PG. you get a raw onion as a prize (must be eaten whole) and you get “fibre to the boat”
And yeah, if only the infamous shirtfront threat had transpired. Perhaps it would have knocked some sense into him… but “humbled by an onion-eater” probably wasn’t an epitaph he deemed befitting of an ex-KGB man.
My list:
Gemstones
Gestations
Ghostly
Hostility
Limitations
Manage
Notation
Siltations
Smiley
Smily
Stylishly
Stylists
But I wasn’t able to find a connection 😛
Also, if you want more tries for testing on the free version, you can open the page in an incognito tab~
I found recently that re-entering the puzzle through the New York Times website actually permits you to play at will. The only catch is that Restart only works the first time, so you either have to keep hitting Delete or keep exiting and entering. Worth it, though!
Ended up with histology /yamen after trying to make mismanagement work
Mismanagement rarely works -by definition…
Good one, Sota!
Amazing work all ‘round today! After much Agony, Negation, and Goatish bleating, I Solemnly and Silently went with Megatons Stylish, though it has Only the Ghostliest whiff of thematic integrity.
I too was Aghast that Hogmany wasn’t accepted.
shanties – semiology
Nice. Me too!
SEGMENTATIONS – SHYLY
I was one letter short with MISMANAGEMENTS SHYLY.
Also missing one letter was GHOSTLIEST TAMELY. I could hardly even get a 3-word solution… after seeing Elitism in the official answer, I realized Egotism could work better than Egoism, so my best 3 word answer here: EGOTISM MANAGES SHYLY (I entered MISMANAGES SHOT TIMELY)
I wanted manholes to work and so I was puzzling syn words and got syntagmata. So ended up with Holies syntagmata which I did not like.
Wanted nosegay, neonatology, nematology or anything else but….
Also wasted time on mismanagement and should have stuck with stylish.
Why oh why if you had the qualities of a yam would you not be YAMISH. Got totally stuck on NEONATOLOGY for way too long
MEGATONS – STYLISHLY
Nice to know it was accepted! I found it after I had already used my turn for the day 🙂
SHANTIES SEMIOLOGY 17/2
Late to the party as always, but I did find this:
MEGAHITS — SONLY 13/2
or: MEGAHITS — SOLEMNLY 16/2
