Wake up, Punxsutawney Phil!
Same, pretty quickly
Ditto – GROUNDHOGS – SPARKPLUG in about 5 mins. Saw GROUND immediately, then GROUNDHOGS, then SPARK, then SPARKPLUG
Yup! Was thinking the same thing! Challenging without being ridiculous!
Same as you, Mark. Half the OA again.
I like finding symmetric pairs, LWM, A↔B ⋀ B↔A, even if they’re not the most letter-efficient. 🙂
Nice rebus with the emojis, by the way.
found the OA, but I was today years old when i found out SPARKPLUG is one word
HOARHOUNDS — SPARKPLUGS
OED does not accept the plural of HOARHOUND, but LB does!
SPARKPLUG — GROUNDHOG
I just saw GROUNDHOG

(Actually I see what you did there; I’m just being a wiseguy.)

HOUNDS – SPARKPLUG
Catching up now, had a bad streak last week not getting a two word solution for many days!
Okay, so i offer:
HOARHOUNDS SPARKPLUG
“Hoar” doesn’t mean what it sounds like, and isn’t a synonym for “boar” (as in hog) which i was kind of thinking (thus, hog hunting hounds), but “hoar” means “furry”. So, “hoarfrost” is “furry frost”. Something i never knew before, but real frost is not too common in Christmas (Florida)
Anyway – “hoarhound” isn’t a furry dog either, but a plant in the mint family … from Wikipedia:
“The Oxford English Dictionary derives the word horehound from Old English hoar (furry, as in “hoarfrost”) and hune (a word of unknown origin designating a class of herbs or plants). The second element was altered by folk etymology.”
So, i guess “hune” eventually got changed into “hound”
The most surprising thing is LB accepted it as a word …
😎🐝🇺🇸
Of course the OA
HOUNDS SPARKPLUG
is more efficient, but i had already typed in
HOARHOUNDS when i saw SPARKPLUG and i didn’t bother looking for a shorter version.
But before “hounds” i really wanted to do something with “shark” … I especially wanted “loanshark” but today’s letter array doesn’t allow a NS sequence …
I typed in:
DOGSHARK
SANDSHARK
HOUNDSHARK
GROUNDSHARK
LB rejected all these … you see them listed in dictionaries and articles, but often as two words.
If LB had allowed it, i could have done:
PLOUGH HOUNDSHARK
PLUG GROUNDSHARK
or even
SPARKPLUG GROUNDSHARKS
and
GROUNDSHARKS
SPARKPLUG
😎🐝
HOUNDS – SPARKPLUG
It’s not the dog in the fight….
Also HANDHOLDS – SPARKPLUG
Speed climber champion
OA. 3 in a row.
Sparkplug Groundhog
Hounds Sparkplug
Started with groundhogs, then saw spark but L needed to clear. Sparkle, sparkling… Somehow I managed to see sparkplug. Reset, put sparkplug and hounds came naturally after.
A mercifully quick OA. Still smarting from last weeks 3 day losing streak.
An optimal 3 today,
