      1. CLAVES-SQUIRTY as well. I knew that AUTOCLAVES is a word, but since the puzzle could not accommodate that, I took a stab at CLAVES and lo and behold it worked.

    1. Same.

I’m irritated that LB didn’t accept ECRUS as a word—it was literally a NYT crossword answer the day before yesterday! 😜

    2. Bernie Horowitz

Found Cavalry Squirty early (the secret weapon that won the West) but then stumbled on Critiques Slsvey (the very definition of punching down!).

      1. The Autoclave is the machine that we use to sterilize surgical instruments between procedures. So I actually used claves being pretty sure it would be accepted.

      1. Radioactive Flower

        Hey, PGGIE,

🎉🎉 Wow!!! You are correct! Yay!!!
        Vending Machine, indeed! 👍🤓

          1. Radioactive Flower

            Hey, LWMMM,

I’m surprised you know SARI SARI Store and my parents own one. It’s a Filipino word. How did you know it?

          2. Oi RrrF,

My wife is a Filipina from a village in Batangas Province. We used to go there frequently when I worked in Asia but it’s been many years since our last visit. We live in Houston, Texas now. She doesn’t have a Sari Sari store here but she does have a small Filipino restaurant- catering shop that specializes in kakanin. Her turon, suman and pancit are especially popular.

          3. Radioactive Flower

            LWMMM,

It’s nice to hear that you have a Filipino connection. I love all the foods you mentioned. PLUS lumpia, adobo, and palitaw.

Filipino wives are the best! 💯
            🤗

      1. Hey DW – i ended up with CAVALRIES SQUATLY also, after failing with Equality and Elasticity along the way …

    1. I trimmed it down to CLAVES-SQUIRTY

After LB accepted CLAVES I had to go find out what it meant: A percussion instrument consisting of a pair of short wooden sticks.

    1. Damnit Mvua, I thought I had a unique answer! Same in less than 10 minutes. Was also close with: Cirques – Suavely (no T)
and Circlets – Suavely (no Q)

    2. I can’t believe I missed this! Also missed OA by a sliver (thought it was AQUAVITE). Ended up with CLIQUIEST TRIVIALITY

  1. An LB story.

The AVIATRICES—SQUATLY pounded the CLAVES—SQUIRTY and overcame their RIVALRIES—SEQUACITY.

    With a QUALITATIVE—ESCRY, one of them CRITIQUES—SUAVELY the CIRQUE—ELASTIVITY of the AQUAVIT—TRICYCLES.

By doing so she removed all of the CLIQUIEST—TRIVIALITY.

    The End
    🙂

All solution words are at least in OED.

  2. Hey guys, I’m new here and I was just wondering what OA meant because I kept seeing it being used everywhere. What a cool thread by the way! Thanks!

        1. Sometimes the official answer (OA) will be the most efficient, but not always. A solution using more letters may surpass the OA with it’s thematic integrity (TI).

The ultimate holy grail is the elusive 12/1, a single word using all 12 letters just once. It has happened. The last I recall was LEXICOGRAPHY.

    1. 😃
“It’s all being run out of the Biden White House. The DOJ, the FBI, the Communists, the Fascists, the Marxists, they’re all in on it.”

  3. I gave up today when neither of my two solutions were accepted despite being words. I had qualitative – escort and scrive – equality.

  4. I tend to get stuck on a word that I want to work, and I have trouble seeing around it. Today it was EQUALITY. I tried SCRIVE, but it wasn’t accepted, so I ended up with a three-word solution
    CATS-STRIVE-(for)EQUALITY
but they’ll never get it because dogs are far superior (let the flames begin LOL).

    1. Similar for me, Rodney. Everything that looked promising failed. I couldn’t fit the C anywhere so I settled for
      CLUE EQUALITIES SURVEY

  5. eventually got the OA, but on the way, I found QUALTRICS–SURVEY. I know the proper noun disqualifies it, but the TI was too good not to share.

  6. Here is the full list including Scrabble words:
